Smt. Sudhawati Agrawal

Smt. Sudhawati Agrawal came to Bhagalpur as a daughter-in-law, from Varanasi in the year 1934. She was married to the literary enthusiast, Sri Satendra Narayan Agrawal, who later become MLA from Congress ticket, and was at the post of vice-Chairman of Legislature Assembly. In the coming years, he became Vice-Chancellor of Bhagalpur University, too.
Sudhawati was born in a renowned Agrawal family of Varanasi. Her grandfather, scholar Dr. Bhagwan Das, was a popular politician of Congress. The upbringing of Sudhawatiji was done almost by freedom fighters, be it Motilal Nehru, Rajagopalchari or Jawaharlal Nehru, she got love and affection from everyone. The environment in which she was raised; made her bold and self-respecting. She had the courage to face the challenges boldly and upfront. As she was raised in political environment the feeling of patriotism ruled her heart, and helping the needy, whole-heartedly, would give her immense happiness. It is said that, behind every successful man, there is women, and the same was true for Sudhawati Ji who played a vital role, when her husband stood for MLA elections. She would lead the women front during the elections and would go from house to house, canvassing for her husband. As a result, Sri Satendra Babu won the MLA elections and remained in power from 1952 to 1967. Seeing her inclination towards social causes, the Bihar State Social Welfare Board made her the Chairman of social welfare projects of rural areas of Nathnagar. She carried out her responsibilities so well that her popularity reached nationwide, as a result, the chairperson of Indian National Social Welfare Board, Smt. Durgabai Deshmukh came to Bhagalpur from Delhi, to monitor the work of rural project of Nathnagar. She was so impressed by the works of Sudhawati Jithat she offered her the post of chairman of Bihar State Social Welfare Board, but she humbly denied her offer. When S.P. of Bhagalpur formed a rifle club, Sudhawatiji participated whole heartedly. Her heart and house, both, always remained opened for the poor and the needy people, and she readily helped them. Once, during a winter midnight, a nervous women, started shouting at her door, BadiBahurani, BadiBahurani!! Sudhawati woke up, wrapped a shawl, and came down immediately, and asked, "Who’s there? ", "I'm mother of Parvati, I have come from Golaghat Gandhi, Parvati is about to deliver a child, wreathing in pain, will die, please save her BadiBahu, " saying this she started crying. You don't worry, everything will be fine. She woke her driver, Ganga, and asked him to take out the car. She then went to Golaghat Gandhi herself and took Parvati and her mother to the Government hospital. She waited there till Parvati and the baby, both were safe. Who would render help in this manner, nowadays, especially for a house helper? This was one the biggest reasons for her popularity.
Her inclination towards Naturopathy has a different story. After spending much time under the guidance of Shri Vitthaldas Modi, and Shri Mahavir Das Poddar in Gorakhpur, Dr. Sadanand Singh, a freedom fighter, established, a Naturopathy centre in a rented house on 18th Dec, 1954, which was duly inaugrated by LokNayakJaiprakash Narayan on 14th March 1955. Dr. Singh oftenused to come to Satendra Narayan Agrawal, in order to discuss the expansion works of his Naturopathy centre. SudhawatiJi had recently returned for Bombay (Mumbai) after meeting her father Sri Prakash Ji. Sri Prakash was the governor of Bombay (Mumbai) at that time. During her stay in Bombay (Mumbai), she went to take a dip in the seawater, and henceforth developed a skin irritation (skin disease). She got herself treated at many places, but still remaineduncured. So, one fine day, she discussed about this issue with Dr. Sadanandji. He assured her that he would cure her completely. Convinced from Dr. Sadanand Ji’s words, she started the naturopathy treatment. And, then the miracle happened. She got rid of her irritation completely and her faith in Naturopathy become immovably stronger. She started visiting the Naturopathy Centre very often. As a result, Dr. Sadanand Singh and the Naturopathy centre started getting support from her. Eventually he made Sudhawatiji, the General Secretary of the centre. Later, the centre was named as, 'Tapovardhan Prakritik Chikitsa Kendra'. "Tapovardhan", was the name of Late, younger brother of Sudhawatiji, who was a pilot by profession. Unfortunately, he died during his treatment, after he was injured in a plane crash. Due to the joint effort of Sudhawatiji and Dr. Sadanandji, the Naturopathy centre gained the due popularity, near and far.
Later on, for the expansion of the centre, a private building was required, but a huge sum of money was also required for the purchase of the land and construction of building. Dedicated to the mission, Sudhawati Ji went to Bombay (Mumbai) with Dr. Sadanandji where her father, Sri Prakash ji was the Governor. With the support of Sri Prakash ji and diligence of Sudhawatiji, 'GalaNite', was organised, on 22 April 1962, at Birla Matushree Auditorium, Bombay (Mumbai). It was a charity show, where huge personalities and celebrities of that era like Md. Rafi, Talat Mahmud, Musician Ravi, etc.participated. As a result of her efforts, the centre was able to collect Rupees one lakhand twenty-five thousand at the event. It was due to the sincere efforts of Sudhawatiji that various eminent personalities like Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Lal Bahadur Sastri, Sri Prakash ji etc., visited the centre and gave their full support in its development. Sudhawatiji’s sincere endeavourled to generous donation by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Ghanshyam Das Birla, J.R.D Tata, P.B. Godrej etc. for the establishment and development of the new centre. On the request of Sudhawatiji, the foundation stone of the own building of the centre was laid by 1st Prime Minister, Pt.
